Citation building
Citation building: your details right everywhere
Getting your name, address and phone number listed correctly on the directories that count.
What this is
A citation is any place online that lists your business details. Search engines use the consistency of those details as a trust signal: if twenty sources agree on your phone number, that is corroboration. If six of them disagree, that is doubt.
It is unglamorous, mechanical work, and it is foundational for local ranking.
What you get
What this involves
-
01
Deciding the canonical details first
Exactly how your business name, address and phone number will be written everywhere. Not "Ltd" in one place and "Limited" in another. This gets agreed before anything is submitted, because fixing it afterwards is the expensive version.
-
02
The directories that matter
The major aggregators and the industry and regional listings relevant to your trade. A hundred listings on sites nobody uses is worth less than a dozen on ones that feed the data others rely on.
-
03
Submissions and verification
Actually creating the listings and completing whatever verification each one demands, which varies from an email to a posted postcard.
-
04
A record of what exists
A list of every listing and its login, handed to you. Without it, the next person has to rediscover them, which is how duplicates get created.
What it costs
Quoted after a free consult, because what it takes depends entirely on what you already have. Book a call, I will tell you what is involved, and you get a number before anything starts. Website plan details are on the pricing page.
A one-time project rather than a monthly fee, with the option of a check later. Recurring billing for citations is common in the industry and rarely justified once the listings exist and are correct.
How this differs
Citation building creates listings that do not exist yet. Local listings cleanup fixes and removes ones that already exist and are wrong. If your business has moved or changed numbers, you need the cleanup first, because building on top of bad data multiplies the problem.
Link building earns editorial links that pass authority. Most citations pass none. They work by corroborating your details rather than by voting for you.
If your Google Business Profile is not set up properly yet, start there. Citations support the profile rather than substituting for it, and the profile is doing most of the work. That is Google Business Profile setup.
Questions
What people ask
How many citations do I need?
Fewer than most services sell. The major aggregators and the genuinely relevant industry and local listings. Volume for its own sake stopped mattering years ago.
I do not have a public address. Does this still work?
Yes. A service-area business lists name and phone consistently and hides the address, the same as on your Google profile. The consistency is what matters.
Is this a monthly service?
It should not be. Build them once, keep them correct, and check occasionally. If someone is billing you monthly to maintain listings that have not changed, ask what they did last month.
Do you use a submission service?
Some aggregators are the sensible route for wide distribution. Where a listing matters it is worth doing directly, because automated submissions are where inconsistencies get introduced.
