Website redesign
Website redesigns that do not cost you your rankings
Replacing a dated or slow website without throwing away the search rankings it already has.
What this is
The reason redesigns go wrong is rarely the design. It is that the new site quietly loses what the old one had earned: URLs change and nothing redirects, a page that ranked gets merged into another, and three months later the phone is quieter and nobody can say exactly why.
A redesign done properly is two jobs at once. Build the better site, and carry the equity across intact.
What you get
What a redesign covers
-
01
An inventory before anything changes
Every existing URL, and which ones actually bring in traffic or links. You cannot protect what you have not written down, and this is the step most redesigns skip.
-
02
Redirect mapping
Every old URL points at its closest equivalent on the new site. Not all of them at the homepage, which is the common shortcut and which throws away most of the value.
-
03
Rewritten content
Copy rebuilt around what customers ask and what you want to rank for, rather than pasted across from a site written years ago for a business that has since changed.
-
04
A mobile-first rebuild
Designed for the phone first, because that is where most of the traffic to a small business site comes from.
-
05
A check after launch
Redirects verified, indexing watched, and the pages that mattered confirmed still present. The window where a redesign goes wrong is the fortnight after it goes live.
When the old content is bad but it is what ranks
This comes up constantly and it is the genuinely hard call in a redesign. A page can be badly written, visibly dated, and still be the thing bringing in work.
The answer is not to preserve bad copy out of superstition, and it is not to delete it because it is ugly. It is to keep the same URL, keep the subject and the substance that earned the rankings, and rewrite around that. What you avoid is changing the address and the topic at the same time, which is how a site loses its position and nobody can point to the cause.
What it costs
Quoted after a free consult, because what it takes depends entirely on what you already have. Book a call, I will tell you what is involved, and you get a number before anything starts. Website plan details are on the pricing page.
A redesign is quoted rather than priced off a list because the work depends on what exists: how many URLs, how much content is worth keeping, and what shape the old site is in.
How this differs
A redesign changes what the site is: new design, new structure, new copy. A website migration changes only where it lives, and the entire objective there is that nothing visible changes at all.
If there is nothing worth preserving, or nothing there yet, you want website design instead. Starting fresh is simpler and usually cheaper than protecting a site that was not earning anything.
Questions
What people ask
Will I lose my Google rankings?
That is the risk the process exists to manage. Rankings can wobble for a few weeks after any significant change while Google recrawls. What prevents real loss is mapping every URL and keeping the subject of the pages that earned position, rather than changing address and content simultaneously.
Can you keep some of my existing pages?
Yes, and often that is the right call for the pages that rank. Keeping a URL is not the same as keeping the copy, and the two decisions get made separately.
How do I know if I need a redesign or just a refresh?
If the structure is sound and it only looks tired, that is smaller work. If customers cannot find what they need, it is slow on a phone, or it does not cover half of what you now do, that is structural and a refresh will not fix it. Bring it to a consult and I will tell you which one you have.
Do you see the site before quoting?
Yes. Quoting a redesign without looking at the site would be guessing, and the number would be wrong in one direction or the other.
