Technical SEO: making your site readable to Google

Fixing what stops Google reading your site properly.

What this is

Technical SEO is the plumbing. None of it is visible to a customer, and all of it decides whether your pages can be found at all. A page Google cannot crawl or index is not competing badly; it is not competing.

This is the work that has to be right before content or links are worth spending anything on.

What you get

What gets fixed

  • 01

    Indexing

Which of your pages are actually in Google's index and which are being skipped, blocked or quietly dropped. This is the first thing to check and the one most often wrong.

  • 02

    Duplicate content

The same page reachable at several addresses, with and without www, with and without a trailing slash, or through parameters. Each duplicate splits the signals that should be pooled on one URL.

  • 03

    Redirects and broken links

Chains of redirects that lose value at each hop, and links pointing at pages that no longer exist. Both waste crawl budget and both are invisible until you look.

  • 04

    Mobile rendering

Google indexes the mobile version of your site. If something breaks or is hidden on a phone, that is the version being judged.

  • 05

    Site structure and internal links

Whether important pages are reachable in a couple of clicks from the homepage, and whether anything is orphaned with nothing pointing at it.

  • 06

    Sitemap and robots

An accurate sitemap listing pages that actually exist and should be indexed, and a robots file that does not accidentally block something important.

What it costs

Quoted after a free consult, because what it takes depends entirely on what you already have. Book a call, I will tell you what is involved, and you get a number before anything starts. Website plan details are on the pricing page.

How this differs

Technical SEO is site-wide plumbing: crawling, indexing, duplication and structure. On-page SEO is per-page editorial work on titles, headings and content. Different problems, different fixes, usually different order.

It overlaps with website speed optimization at one point, load time, but speed is a single metric while this covers everything that affects whether a page can be read and understood.

On a site I built, most of this is already right and there is nothing to sell you. This service exists mainly for sites built elsewhere, or ones that have accumulated problems over years of changes.

Questions

What people ask

How do I know if I have technical problems?

Search Console will tell you, and connecting it is Google Search Console setup. The blunt test: search for your exact business name plus a page title. If the page does not come up, something is wrong at this level.

What is the most common issue you see?

Pages that were never indexed, usually because nothing links to them or they were launched and forgotten. After that, the same content reachable at more than one address.

Do you fix these or just report them?

Either. Fixing is faster if I have access. If you have a developer, the findings are written so they can work from them.

Will fixing this improve my rankings?

It removes the things preventing you from ranking. That is not the same as making you rank, and anyone who conflates the two is overselling. If pages were not indexed, the gain can be immediate and large; if they were already fine, the gain is small.
